Recorded Future - Overcoming GEOINT Workforce Hurdles to Unlock the Power of Artificial Intelligence

We live in a world in which threats are constantly growing and morphing. Geospatial intelligence (GEOINT) links events to geography through visual depictions and deep analysis. This empowers leaders to understand what is happening, where it’s happening, and why it’s happening — so they can take decisive action to protect citizens.

Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are driving unprecedented change and opportunity in this space. The ability to merge physical models with digital content and conduct analysis at extraordinary speed is a game-changer for the GEOINT workforce — but such a major industry shakeup also presents new challenges.

Benefits of Implementing Artificial Intelligence

A new study by the United States Geospatial Intelligence Foundation (USGIF) and MeriTalk, “Mapping AI to the GEOINT Workforce,” shows that 91% of geospatial intelligence stakeholders believe AI has the potential to greatly improve the discipline — particularly in the areas of national security, emergency response, and urban planning and development.

Respondents currently implementing AI into their workflows have experienced its transformative value first hand, citing the following initial benefits:

  • 71% experienced faster decision-making
  • 64% accelerated their data analysis
  • 49% enhanced accuracy in image classification or object detection
  • 49% improved forecasting or pattern recognition
  • 49% had more time available for mission-critical tasks or innovation

Challenges in Capitalizing on Artificial Intelligence

More than three-quarters of stakeholders believe the average GEOINT role will involve human and machine teaming for analysis and decision-making within the next five years. Yet, the majority believes that today’s workforce is largely underprepared to capitalize on the technology.

The biggest challenge these organizations face? A pervasive skills gap, according to 57% of respondents. Most say the current workforce has only half (or fewer) of the skills they’ll need to actualize AI benefits. Beyond these personnel hurdles, 51% say organizations face significant security security concerns, and 49% say a lack of funding presents a challenge.

Future-Proofing the GEOINT Tradecraft With AI-Based Security Intelligence

For the GEOINT field, AI is a part of the not-so-distant future. So, organizations are preparing for it today.

It’s encouraging to see government and higher education sectors doubling down on AI skills development to help workers expand their proficiencies in advanced statistics, critical thinking, data visualization, and more.

To further accelerate the adoption and impact of AI, these organizations must look for ways to empower and amplify their workforce through human and machine teaming. After all, it’s an indisputable fact that computers can process data exponentially faster than any humans can. Conversely, AI cannot dramatically outperform human intelligence in isolation. When people and machines are paired, each works smarter, which saves time and money, reduces human burnout, and maximizes organizational benefits.

AI and Machine Learning for Security Intelligence

Much like geospatial intelligence, the field of cybersecurity is ripe for AI systems. Recorded Future is proud to be at the forefront of this movement. Since the beginning, we’ve leveraged AI and machine learning (ML) to overcome human challenges in organizing and analyzing unstructured data, and effectively modeling all relevant security information available on the internet. It’s what has always set us apart.

Today, our comprehensive security intelligence solutions are powered by advanced AI and ML, represented by our Security Intelligence Graph. By harnessing AI, we empower organizations to automate, accelerate, and scale up manual human tasks across their entire security ecosystem, and apply more complex analytics to top-of-mind challenges — like predicting future cyber threats.

Embracing security intelligence can help GEOINT teams bridge skill gaps, intensify their situational awareness, inform critical missions, and realize the full value of AI. And it’s not just GEOINT that can benefit. Recorded Future delivers real-time, contextual intelligence that can help any security team in any sector make better, faster decisions to drive risk reduction and bottom line benefits.
