Recorded Future - Land O’Lakes Prioritizes Proactive Security and Automation With Intelligence From Recorded Future

Key Takeaways

Real-time security intelligence, continuous monitoring, and automated alerting from Recorded Future has helped this food and agribusiness leader to:

  • Improve overall visibility of threats targeting the organization by 25%
  • Accelerate analysis of phishing attempts and critical vulnerabilities, and prioritize patching
  • Boost collaboration and information sharing across the entire security organization

Chances are, you’ve purchased many Land O’Lakes, Inc. products over the years. From dairy products to dog food — and everything in between — Land O’Lakes is one of America’s largest agribusiness and food companies, with a unique farm-to-fork approach and a legacy of nearly 100 years of excellence.

Protecting the company comprising 10,000 people across 50 states and more than 60 countries from emerging threats is a full-time job for the Land O’Lakes’ threat and vulnerability management team. However, they have a secret weapon: security intelligence from Recorded Future helps them prioritize vulnerabilities and threats, so they can make faster, more informed decisions based on risk.

A Proactive Approach To Stay Ahead of Threats

While there are thousands of critical vulnerabilities for IT teams to potentially patch today, only 5.5% of vulnerabilities are ever actually exploited in the wild. Land O’Lakes’ senior security engineer Chris Zieg recalls the need for a more proactive approach to security, coupled with an emphasis on scaling automation capabilities, that led his team to the Recorded Future Platform in 2018.

Today, security intelligence from the broadest range of sources and languages is integrated seamlessly into Land O’Lakes’ security stack — including a SEIM solution and orchestration tool — to enrich internal data. Notes Zieg, “Recorded Future helps us quickly assess and prioritize things such as phishing emails and critical vulnerabilities, which helps us focus our efforts and speed up response times to high-priority threats.”

Real-time Recorded Future Risk Scores based on actual exploitability enable the Land O’Lakes team to quickly reduce risk by locating, prioritizing, and patching vulnerabilities that have been weaponized in the wild. With transparent access to the sources used to determine these scores, the team can make their own determinations and feel confident in their decisions.

The ability to create customized watch lists has also proven to be particularly useful. By configuring automatic alerts based on topics of interest, they know immediately when their company, product names, and more are mentioned on the web.

Zieg shares an example that particularly stands out for him. “One morning, we received an alert from Recorded Future on a domain registration very similar to ours. It looked suspicious, so we checked it out and expanded our search. We could see employees had received phishing emails from this domain, so we immediately took action and deleted the emails from Outlook Exchange and blocked the domain — all before lunch.”

A Focus on Automation for Continued Success

Continuous monitoring, real-time security intelligence, and automated alerting from Recorded Future has helped the Land O’Lakes team:

  • Improve overall visibility of threats targeting the organization by 25%
  • Accelerate analysis of phishing attempts and critical vulnerabilities, and prioritize patching
  • Boost collaboration and information sharing across the entire security organization

“Now, if our CISO forwards us an email about a brand new vulnerability, we can do a rapid analysis, find out if it’s going to impact us, and communicate our findings to the security team quickly,” notes Zieg.

This is only the beginning. The team has plans to leverage intelligence from Recorded Future to automate additional security processes going forward.

Recorded Future’s combination of automated data collection and human analysis isn’t the only thing that makes them unique, concludes Zeig. “I like how Recorded Future operates and is organized, and I continue to be impressed by the curated information they provide. They’re focused on working with us as a company and meeting our individualized needs.”
